Thank you for using LookStuffUp. I am committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information the extension handles and why in a simple manner. No BS or unnecessary legal jargon.

The Short Version

I, the developer of LookStuffUp, do not collect, store, or have access to any of your personal information, search queries, or browsing history. Your data is your own.

The extension is designed to be completely private and mostly on-device. The Summarize and Translate features process your text directly on your device, and nothing is sent to external servers. For the Lookup feature, highlighted text is sent directly to third-party services from your browser, but it is never seen by me.

On-Device AI Features: Summarization and Translation

LookStuffUp now includes experimental features for summarizing and translating text. These features are designed with privacy as the highest priority.

• On-Device Processing: When you use the "Summarize" or "Translate" tabs, the highlighted text is processed entirely on your local computer using Google's built-in AI models provided by the Chrome browser (such as Gemini Nano).
• No Data Transmission: For these features, your text is never sent to Google, our servers, or any other third-party service. The entire process happens locally, ensuring your information remains completely private.
• Experimental Nature: Please note that these are experimental Chrome features that require manual activation in your browser's settings to function.

Information Handled by the Extension

To provide you with contextual information, the extension needs to handle two types of data locally on your computer:

• Highlighted Text:
  • For the Lookup feature, the text you highlight is sent directly from your browser to various third-party services to get relevant search results. This data is never stored by the extension, and it is never seen by or transmitted to me.
  • For the Summarize and Translate features, please see the "On-Device AI Features" section above.
• Optional API Keys: If you choose to use the enhanced Google Search feature for lookups, you can provide your own Google API Key and Programmable Search Engine ID. These keys are stored exclusively on your local computer using your browser's secure, synced storage. They are only used to communicate directly with the Google Search API from your browser and are never transmitted to our servers.

Third-Party Services (for the Lookup Feature Only)

The "Lookup" feature sends the text you highlight directly to the following third-party services. I am not responsible for the privacy practices of these services and recommend reviewing their privacy policies:

Data Security

I have designed the extension to process everything either on your device (for AI features) or directly between your browser and third-party APIs (for the Lookup feature). No data passes through servers that I control.

Changes to This Policy

If I update the extension in a way that materially changes how your data is handled, I will update this policy accordingly.
