Two-Stage Draw Mechanics
Stage 1 draws a country using birth weights sourced from the UN World Population Prospects (2024). Each country's probability is proportional to its annual birth count.
Stage 2 draws individual characteristics (sex, wealth quintile, and urban/rural residence) using country-specific probability estimates. Sex splits reflect birth sex ratios. Urban/rural splits draw from World Bank urbanization data.
Primary Data Sources
UN World Population Prospects (2024): Annual birth counts and gender-disaggregated life expectancies.
World Bank World Development Indicators (2023): GDP per capita (PPP) for World Bank member states, plus access rates for electricity, water, sanitation, and urbanization ratios.
World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP): Income quintile distribution shares.
IMF World Economic Outlook (2026): GDP per capita (PPP) for countries not covered by the World Bank, including Taiwan, Venezuela, Yemen, and Liechtenstein.
CIA World Factbook (2023/24): GDP per capita (PPP) for territories and non-member states absent from IMF and World Bank data, including crown dependencies, overseas territories, and sanctioned states.
Economist Intelligence Unit: Country composite democracy indexes.
UCDP / PRIO Conflict Database: Fatalities reported in state-based and non-state conflicts.
UNICEF: Child marriage and FGM prevalence databases.
GDP Coverage Notes
For the small number of French overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, and others) with no standalone figure in any of the above sources, income estimates are derived from regional economic data and parent-country income levels. These are labeled as estimates in the data gaps report.
Data Gaps Report
This report lists indicators that were entirely absent from the primary World Bank data for this country. Where a metric is missing, supplementary sources (IMF, CIA World Factbook, regional estimates) are used before falling back to a conservative global default. No regional or income-group averages are imputed for non-GDP metrics.
